Hello again.

10 Aug

Its been a few years. I almost forgot that I had started this blog. I was inspired by this post  to start blogging again. I enjoy it when I do it, the problem is that I seem to always stop just short of making it a habit.

Suffice it to say, it will (most likely) no longer be a “brand identity” blog, as I have indicated previously. Honestly, who knows what it will be! What i do know, thanks the the aforementioned post and blog, is that I am a sanner and Multipotentialite, and having a blog is a good way to process thoughts and findings and i think im ready now to really make a go of it!

What is a Brand Identity?

21 Oct

I like to think of a Brand Identity as a business’s face to the world. It starts with the logo and gets carried through all of the associated collateral (business card, letterhead, website, etc.) The key is consistency. Just as all of the elements of a person (job, family, home town, etc.) add up to create a sense of personal identity, all of these elements of a business together help form the business’s Brand Identity.

Admittedly, this is all a little abstract and subtle. However, it is so very important. Every aspect of a business’s communication needs to be consistent in message and tone. Whether it be the logo, a newspaper advertisement, commercial spot, or PowerPoint presentation, consistency is key. Think of these not as separate elements that you need for your business, but as essential communication tools. These are all chances to simultaneously reveal and define a different aspect of your business’s voice, vision and message.

Some changes at TaylorGillis.com

14 Oct

Some recent visitors may have noticed some changes upon visiting taylorgillis.com. I have decided to gradually move my website and blog off of Weebly (Weebly was what I used to quickly create my first website).

I have gotten a new server and I am currently building a completely new site from scratch! Right now I only have a placeholder up. Soon I will integrate this blog seamlessly into the site so there won’t be a need to link over.

I am doing this because I will be able to create a site that will be completely customizable. I plan on creating a site that will be a home for both my Photography and my freelance Graphic Design business (Taylor Gillis Design).

So stay tuned!

Gertrude Goldschmidt “Drawings Without Paper”

I recently found these works called “Drawings Without Paper” by Gertrude Goldschmidt as I was searching through the MoMA site. I hadn’t heard of her before. I love these works. They are designed to be hung away from the wall, with light shining on them in order to cast a shadow.

From the MoMA site:

“Towards the late 1960s Gego conceived the environmental wire sculptures that she called Reticuláreas. Fundamentally geometric, these weblike structures can be configured in an endless number of ways, thereby transforming the exhibition space. Drawing without Paper comes from a series of the same name, created between the mid–1970s and the late 1980s, that consists of three–dimensional metallic structures made of wire, thread, and various found objects. Normally installed close to the wall, casting a shadow, the piece incorporates the space around it by leaving its trace the open field of the gallery. The three–dimensionality of this drawing is related to Greek skiagraphy (shadow writing) and emphasizes the thickness of the lines.”

Really cool stuff!

Zatista featured artist!

14 Oct

I’m excited! I was just notified that I will be the featured artist on Zatista’s Facebook page tomorrow (Thursday). I am convinced that Zatista is the best way to but original artwork on the internet. I actually wrote a review about the site earlier this year for EmptyEasel.com.

“Into the Collage-a-Scope”

9 Oct

5906222This is an image from my friend Robert Gullie’s new series called “Into the Collage-a-Scope”. This work is somewhat of a departure for Bob, who up until this recent series had created beautiful, dreamlike, hand tinted photographs. These mixed media collages are even more dreamlike, surreal, weird, and just as stunning.

Bob was recently featured in an article in the Arts section of the Albany Times Union. 18 images from the collage series are on view at the Clement Art Gallery in Troy through Dec. 24. Be sure to take a look at his website to see more of this series as well as his other work.
